Learn Your Healthy Habits BEFORE the Stress of the Holidays

The holidays can be a stressful time of year. Trying to take control of you weight, your prediabetes, or other health issues related to healthy lifestyle can be daunting. It is so important to start learning healthy habits BEFORE the stress of the holidays makes it more difficult. A bit of planning can go a long way... but it needs to be in place before the holidays start. This is why it is a good idea to start now in October. The focus on food during the holidays can make it particularly difficult, making a person feel sad or left out of the the holiday festivities.

It's easy enough for people to say, "keep a schedule.... eat in moderation... etc..." However, if you are not practiced at this beforehand, then how are you supposed to achieve this during stressful times?

Setting unrealistic goals that you are not sure you can achieve, especially during a time of stress, is a recipe for disaster. A better way of looking at this is to start with small behaviors that will at least keep you steady during the holidays. Start practicing them now so they are familiar by the time Halloween and the other holidays arrive.

The key is to also not take on too much. Taking on too many goals at once can be overwhelming, without stress. So imagine doing so when so much is going on. Most people have a maximum capacity for stress. I cannot tell you how many times in my practice I have seen so many people gung-ho to do "everything" at once just to end up giving up within weeks. It is better to take the process slower. Get one behavior down and master it before going on to the next. When starting a healthy lifestyle, this is key. People who master one habit before working on the next, are more likely to succeed with their ultimate goals. They are more likely to handle stressful times better because they already know that they can handle it, especially when they have a plan in place.

Start today by finding "ONE" small habit you can change. Maybe it is as simple as drinking more water each day. Master that one habit for a few weeks and see how it feels. Then move on to the next. It will help prepare your for the holidays and give you the start you need to make it through the end of the year.
